It is free, it is always here for us, it is within us and it makes our choices and our ways of life.
If our current way just does not work, then let’s find another one. Such a way that is above perspective, so we have a kind of detached view on the former way. What for? Because only then we can see why we could not walk the former way. Then we might actually see some important dots or connections, we just could not see before as we were tightly close to the situation or way. We even could have been a part of some bigger context we could not understand at that point, and so on.
If we are willing to leave the non-working way or situation, then we find the right way. Otherwise we stay stuck basically and we might be only upset, with the people around or even with the whole „unfair“ world. Well, it is up to each of us of course, either we can decide to find the right way or not.
Georges Gurdjieff combined three established traditional „ways“ or „schools“ of the emotions, the body, and the mind. His Fourth Way is just like a way above perspective the separate three ways. The three ways separately do not work, they work only together. Then again, you can see that when you look at it from above perspective. Gurdjieff’s Fourth Way is an approach to self-development, by the way… Gurdjieff’s knowledge comes from rich real life experiences, observation and practice.
Self-development begins with self-observation, self-reflection and honesty about oneself. Something I am often missing in a world where we are offered on every corner “easier” way to live, like shortcuts, and many times not thinking it through if it really does make our live easier, or whether it does anything at all. Anyways, we have a free will to choose to take such offer or not.
If we do not start from ourselves, we cannot change much around us, we cannot change our lives as much as we would like to, we do not have fulfilled relationships, we do not have satisfying jobs, we cannot change our foundations really. With no clear vision of our self, our intentions, our values, our strength, we do not create clear vision of our life.
There is a way for everyone… I would like to remind us – we all are born with strength to live, free will, independence and open-mindedness. Only through our lives we are being repressed or constrained by people, by our culture or the system, or even by our family. And yet the strength to live, to practice our free will, to live our inner independence and open-mindedness is within us. Nobody took it from us. Nobody is able to. It can happen that sometimes we feel otherwise, sure, but at any given moment we can remember all that power we all have, and we can decide to allow ourselves to live our lives based on our free will.
My own experience is that there is a way until there is not. When there is not, I leave for a new way. Or the case is that I need to overcome some of my own constraints to carry on the way I want to have. I could choose not to bother overcoming my own challenges, fears, or other lacks – take the „easier“ way. But personally I would not be where I am today.
Georges Gurdjieff said: „It is impossible to recognize a wrong way without knowing the right way. This means that it is no use troubling oneself how to recognize a wrong way. One must think of how to find the right way.“
